Employer Search
Not a great depth of information about each individual employer, but
this site can be very useful to generate a list of potential contacts for
you.
IMPORTANT IRRITATING NOTE: IF YOU
WANT TO DO A 2ND SEARCH with a different zipcode or a different business
type, BE SURE to not try to start again by using the back button, but instead
hit the link in the left column called "Search for an Employer". Otherwise
you might have to exit from the Internet, reconnect to the Internet,
and then open up this website again.

Frame;$sessionid$AL4RCQYAAAAHRIC4BNSAAAA?pg=43010
"Allows you to search for businesses in the state of Minnesota by company
name, business description, zip code, and SIC code. For example, if you
want to find the Mall of America, you could enter mall and get a list of
all businesses that contain the word mall. You could also enter shop or
shopping as the business description. A zip code search can help you locate
businesses near you, and a SIC search will show you businesses in a particular
category of interest to you."

Using Search Engines
Another way to find out whether a company has a website
is to use search engines such as AltaVista or
Google or HotBot
Google and Hotbot are the ones we currently find most
effective. Click on the link above or go to
http://www.google.com/
or
http://hotbot.lycos.com/
Many times it's more effeective to use "meta-search
engines" (which submit your search to several search engines, which is
a good idea, because they each search for webites in different ways) such
as
Dogpile
at http://www.dogpile.com
Savvy Search
at http://www.savvysearch.com
MetaCrawler
at http://www.metacrawler.com
See eresumes.com's list of
Popular
Search Engines and their Characteristics
http://www.eresumes.com/erezbook/erez_appd.htm
-
If, in your search, two words or more belong together in exact order, for
example "machine shops", be sure to enclose the words in quotes. Otherwise
the search engine will come up with hundreds of sites that deal with any
kind of "machine" and hundreds that deal with everything from woodworking
"shops"' to bridal "shops".
-
Put a plus symbol ("+") in front of all words or phrases you want the search
engine to be sure to find in the websites that it reports
to you.
-
So, you might ask a search engine to seek for:
+"machine shops" +Minneapolis

The reasons to get information about
employers:
So you know which employers are good for you to contact "cold"
for information
Once you have an interview, to build up your knowledge of
the employer.
It is becoming more and more possible to obtain employer
information over the Internet.
To find out whether a company has a website, perhaps
the easiest way is to call the company's general number and ask if they
have one and what its web address is.
(Some employers list their job openings on their
websites some do, some don't)

Using Email
in Your Job Search
Job Scouts
(or Job Agents): Websites that will seek out jobs for you
Resume
Advice: Writing Resumes and Putting Them on the Internet
Resume
Websites: Where You Can Put Your Resume on the Internet
.
Free E-mail Providers: Websites
that provide free e-mail. E-mail is
getting to be nearly essential for your job search. Even if you don't have
a computer or Internet access at home, you can have a free email address,
where you can send and receive email. You can access your e-mail
from any computer that has Internet access (in our Resource Room, at home,
at a library, at school).
Why you would want to have an email
address and why you would want to start using and checking
your email regularly:
-
Several websites that list job openings (for example, Minnesota's Job Bank)
will let you say what kind of a job you want, where located, how much experience
you have, etc. and then you can request that the web site notify you of
any new openings, by sending them to your email for you to look at , if
those openings fit what you're looking for. This means that a lot of work
will be done for you.
-
You can send your resume to employers by email.
-
Employers can contact you at your email address.
-
You can put your email address on your resume - it makes you look "with
it".
Two common sites to get free email are:
1. Yahoo
- where your email address would look like: yourname67@yahoo.com
Follow the links for email or mail in Yahoo's site
http://www.yahoo.com/
2. Hotmail -
where your email address would look like: yourname67@hotmail.com
Follow the links for email or mail in Microsoft's Hotmail site
http://www.hotmail.com/
REMEMBER: Copy down your
email USERNAME and PASSWORD
and carry them with you in your billfold or purse.
YOU MUST copy the Username and Password exactly
as you entered them - with the exact capital letters and exact small letters,
usually with no spaces. And you must enter them in the same way when you
go to get your email. If you don't remember your password, many websites
that provide email will let you answer a secret question to help you retrieve
the password.
To get into your email:
-
First get into the website that is providing your email by one of the following:
-
Go to File/Open Page and type in the middle of the website address (examples:
Yahoo, Hotmail), then hit the Enter button.
-
OR, If that doesn't work, then go to File/Open Page and type in the whole
website name (examples: http://www.yahoo.com, OR http://www.hotmail.com),
then hit the Enter button.
-
OR, In the "location" space at the top of the page, erase what's there
and type in the whole website name (examples: http://www.yahoo.com, OR
http://www.hotmail.com), then hit the Enter button.
-
Then follow the links on the page(s) to get you to the place where you
can enter your username and your password.
-
When you see your email messages listed, click on the underlined portion
of each listing to see the email message.
-
If you can't get into your email, it's probably because you have the wrong
Username or wrong Password or both, or that you used small letters where
you were supposed to use capitals, or vice versa. Again, if you don't remember
your password, many websites that provide email will let you answer a secret
question to help you retrieve the password.
