Memorial Day program

A simple, moving village tradition: neighbors gather among the oaks and read the names of local veterans.

Each Memorial Day at 10:30 a.m., Marine holds a community program at Oakland Cemetery, the city-owned, non-denominational cemetery on the western edge of the village. The ceremony honors veterans buried there; their names are read aloud as part of the program.

Families who would like a veteran buried at Oakland Cemetery added to the reading list can contact the city office (121 Judd Street, (651) 433-3636).

The cemetery is a short drive or a pleasant walk west of Judd Street. Parking is limited, so carpool or walk if you can, and arrive a few minutes early. Late May weather in Marine is usually mild — average highs are about 67°F — but bring a layer in case of a cool, damp morning.
