Reptiles & amphibians

30 species of reptiles and amphibians — the spring frog chorus peaks in April and May.

In early spring, wood frogs, spring peepers and chorus frogs call from flooded woods before the ice is fully gone. Painted turtles bask on logs from April to September, and the river holds map turtles, snapping turtles and spiny softshells. Garter snakes are common; the western foxsnake and hognose snake are harmless species that sometimes startle hikers. Minnesota’s Blanding’s turtle, a threatened species, has also been recorded nearby.

Naturalists have logged 30 species of reptiles & amphibians within 10 km of the village. The most species are recorded in May. Below are the 26 species with at least two research-grade records, most-recorded first.

Turtle crossings: In June, turtles cross roads to lay eggs. Slow down on Highway 95 near wetlands, and if you help one across, move it in the direction it was heading.
