Race and Parade and ancillary events
our fourth on third street
in the solar-noon heat of this new july, cicadas steam in the creeping-charley salad of our side yard
still perfect from yesterday’s mowing before the storm, accompanied by distant slamming screen doors, muted summer voices of children and a shadow percussive orchestra of ladyfingers, blackcats and sirens from the parade. in the closeness of this dining room, ghosts of cellar air remind us of grotto earth and how old our house is
as we cool in the wash from the fan on the porch remembering summers: her memphis, west drive with agnes eating jellyroll cakes and watermelon, drinking iced cokes before dinner, barefoot on the kitchen tiles, laughing. his west, along the highline, eastern slope wind and heat with cherry bombs, artillery simulators and half sticks of dynamite from the reservation, alone. in the evening the thunk of the ground mortar signals the oooh from the crowd,
the burst high above the aaah; thunk, oooh, burst aaah; thunk oooh, burst aaah. chest pounding aerial compressions bounce off wisconsin and echo the intensity of these twenty minutes as dogs disappear and we wonder what the birds do. then the big finish. then the applause. then the traffic and serene marine sighs quietly again- happy birthday america. The first-ever Local Poets' Night took place in Marine
on Friday evening, December 14, 2007 from 6 to 9 p.m. This showcase of local poets and poetry featured readings by Juli Hagstrom, Laurel Anderson, Mary Fernstrum, Laurie Allmann, Don Mitchell, and many more. Join us for a veritable panoply of fine verse at venues along Judd Street in Marine. We'll begin in the General Store with readings of favorite food poems (a rich genre), followed by an hour of readings at the Marine Branch Library, and finally, a gathering at Roberta's Coffee Shop to top off the night with a closing round of poems and cups of coffee-scented cocoa and cider. Local Poets' Night is produced by Arcola Mills in partnership with the Marine Branch Library, the Marine General Store and Roberta's Coffee Shop, with funding support from the Mardag Foundation. See Arcola's website at www.arcolamills.org or call 651-439-1652. Arcola Mills Historic Foundation
